After winding a weight to the highest position the mechanism would strike the bell for the next four hours at timed intervals. When the four hours were up, the weight rose back up and the cycle would repeat itself. This was an ideal solution to the dilemma of the fog bell. The mechanism worked so well that it remained in service until l883, when a similar device and a larger bell replaced it.
